The digital creator and impact economies often fall into the same trap of ‘empty tokens’ and ‘fragmented value systems’. Many Web3 projects launch currencies without real utility, turning participation into speculation. Meanwhile, creators and communities operate across disconnected platforms where engagement, funding, and impact rarely align. The result is a cycle of short‑term hype and long‑term value leakage.

Stablecoin payments reached 33 trillion dollars in 2025, up 72% from the year before. Tokenized U.S. Treasuries crossed 10 billion dollars in value. Spot Bitcoin ETFs in the U.S. now hold well over 100 billion dollars, with steady net inflows since launch.

Look a little closer and the picture gets stranger.

Most of the trading behind these assets still happens offshore. If adoption is this far along, why is so much of the activity happening outside the jurisdictions doing the most regulatory work?

The U.S. Fixed the Rules, Not the Flow

On the surface, the U.S. has done what the industry asked for: clearer rules, bank‑grade custody, and products that fit into existing portfolios.

Several milestones stand :

• FASB ASU 2023‑08 lets carry crypto at fair value instead of locking in one‑way impairment charges.

• The SEC stepped back from SAB 121, removing a capital treatment that made it uneconomical for banks to offer custody at scale.

• The GENIUS Act created a federal regime for payment stablecoins, with clear reserve rules and supervision.​

• The CLARITY Act, now moving through the process, is meant to finally stop the “is this a security?” guessing game for most digital assets by drawing cleaner lines between SEC and CFTC oversight.

In response, capital has responded in predictable ways:

1. Stablecoins now behave like a parallel dollar settlement layer for cross‑border payments, exchange flows, and on‑chain treasury movements, with 33 trillion dollars in 2025 volume and growing integration across payments and fintech

2. Tokenized U.S. Treasuries have shifted from pilot projects to useful plumbing, surpassing 10 billion dollars in value, with analytics dashboards such as RWA.xyz showing live totals, asset breakdown, and holder counts across USYC, USDY, BUIDL and others.

3. Spot Bitcoin ETFs have become the default institutional wrapper, with total Bitcoin ETF AUM now above 100 billion dollars and some estimates closer to 120–125 billion once all issuers are counted.​

The ETF story is especially concentrated. As of late January 2026, a handful of U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs control most of the ETF‑held Bitcoin, with BlackRock and Fidelity out in front according to aggregate AUM rankings. See table below.

If you stopped here, you might assume the U.S. has quietly become the natural home of crypto liquidity. The trading data says otherwise.

Where Liquidity Actually Lives

Who holds the assets is one story. Where they change hands is another.

CoinGecko’s 2025 centralized exchange market‑share shows how skewed spot trading still is. Across the year, Binance cleared around $7.3 trillion dollars in spot volume, compared with roughly $1.5 trillion for Bybit, $1.1 trillion for Coinbase, and just over $1.0 trillion for Korea’s Upbit in CoinGecko’s aggregated series.

Even on a twelve‑month view, Binance’s spot volume is 6x+ larger than Coinbase’s, with Bybit also ahead. The deepest books and tightest spreads in Bitcoin and large caps are still on platforms based in, or closely linked to, offshore hubs like the UAE and other low‑tax jurisdictions, not on U.S. soil.

In Korea, tighter rules have thinned activity on domestic venues, but that volume did not simply reappear in New York or Chicago. Reports on 2025 spot activity show Korean exchanges losing share while global offshore venues hold overall volumes roughly steady, suggesting that price discovery is drifting away from the strictest regimes rather than towards them.

The gap between where the rules are strongest and where the trading is deepest is the core of the problem.

Two Ways To Read The Offshore Story

The order book does not tell you who is on each side of the trade, but it does push us toward two different ways of explaining what we see.

1. Exiled capital

One reading is that a big chunk of “offshore” volume is not offshore in any meaningful sense. It is U.S. and Chinese capital accessing Binance and other venues through VPNs and intermediaries.​

From a trader’s seat, the incentives are simple. A fully compliant U.S. exchange means tighter leverage, narrower product sets, high tax visibility, and more intrusive reporting. A foreign venue often offers higher leverage, broader derivatives menus, lower fees, and fewer points where a supervisor or tax authority sees day‑to‑day activity.

If that behaviour is happening at scale, policy has not pushed people out of crypto. It has pushed them out of sight.​

2. Organic offshore demand

The other reading is that offshore liquidity is not a workaround at all. It is where rational, mobile capital actually wants to be.​

Dubai and the wider UAE pair formal licensing regimes with zero personal income and capital‑gains tax on most trading, and straightforward free‑zone structures for funds and trading firms. Singapore offers its own mix of licensing, prudential oversight, and relatively favourable treatment for sophisticated participants. Those structural choices, not press conferences, shape where funds, market makers, and professional traders choose to base themselves.​​

Seen that way, Binance’s lead and the rise of exchanges anchored in these hubs are less about VPNs and more about globally mobile capital picking the venues that suit it best.​

In practice, both forces are likely at work. Which one dominates will decide whether the U.S. ever really closes the gap.

CLARITY as a Live Experiment

CLARITY is where this stops being a theoretical debate and turns into an experiment in real time.​

The CLARITY framework is designed to split digital assets into clearer buckets, align SEC and CFTC roles, and give exchanges a rulebook they can actually implement, as multiple legal and industry summaries emphasise. The GENIUS Act already showed what happens when you do that for stablecoins: volumes surge, institutional comfort rises, and banks begin wiring payment flows into the new rails, a shift noted by both consultancies and digital‑asset custodians.

If CLARITY lands roughly as advertised, the next three to five years tell you which story about offshore liquidity is closer to the truth:

1. If spot and derivatives volumes on U.S. venues start to narrow the gap with Binance, Bybit, and peers, that supports the “exiled capital” view. The money wanted to be onshore; it was just waiting for a rulebook.​

2. If assets in U.S. wrappers keep climbing but the bulk of trading and price discovery stays offshore, then the U.S. has become a safe place to hold and package exposure, not the place where markets actually trade.​

In that second scenario, Wall Street manufactures the wrappers and handles custody, while Dubai, Singapore, and other hubs continue to host the risk.

The Ghost‑Market Risk

The same tension shows up in tokenized Treasuries and other real‑world assets, just with fewer headlines.​

Crossing 10 billion dollars in tokenized U.S. Treasuries is clearly a milestone. Data from Arkham and RWA dashboards and RWA.xyz’s Treasuries view shows rapid growth, with a small set of large Treasury tokens doing most of the work and aggregate tokenized bond and credit markets pushing towards the high‑teens billions. Yet tokenization market overviews point out that, for many of these instruments, transfer volumes and active addresses remain modest relative to outstanding supply, suggesting that most positions are held as parked cash‑like assets rather than traded securities.

Tokenized bonds and private credit only deliver on their promise if investors can exit without blowing out spreads, and if market makers can hedge and warehouse risk on venues that actually list these instruments. A simple early red flag would be large on‑chain bond or credit deals that see only a handful of trades in a week and consistently wide bid‑ask spreads versus their off‑chain equivalents.​

If the deepest liquidity and most sophisticated market makers stay on platforms that cannot list these assets for regulatory reasons, you end up with solid instruments on modern rails, but thin secondary trading and wide gaps between buyers and sellers. That is not just slow adoption; it is exactly the kind of “ghost market” several RWA analysts have warned about.

In that world, the pipes look new, but the water is barely moving.

What Builders, Institutions, and Policymakers Should Take Away

Seen this way, the numbers are less a recap and more a set of decisions that people now have to make.​

• If you are building, the question is not “U.S. or offshore?” in the abstract. It is “where will my users actually trade, and what does that imply for how I design the product, structure the company, and think about listings and market‑maker incentives?”​

• If you sit on an institutional balance sheet, you are choosing between comfort and liquidity. Stablecoin and Treasury tokenization data shows that assets are moving on‑chain, but exchange data tells you the most active spot and derivatives risk still lives elsewhere. For banks and payment providers, that 33 trillion dollars in stablecoin volume is already a parallel dollar settlement layer that does not run through traditional correspondent banking, a point echoed in recent policy and industry reports on cross‑border payments.

• If you make policy, the scoreboard cannot just be laws passed or ETFs listed. It has to include where the deepest order books sit a few years after CLARITY: onshore, or in the same low‑tax, high‑leverage hubs that dominate today.

We do not pretend to know exactly how this plays out. The data is still early and, in places, messy. What we are comfortable saying is that it is worth asking these questions out in the open and anchoring them in what we can actually measure.

Underneath all of this is one question the next cycle will answer more clearly than any model can today: is offshore volume mostly exiled capital waiting for a reason to come home, or has global liquidity already decided that its natural home is somewhere else?​

“Mass adoption” became one of the stalest phrases in Web3 over the last several years. The industry cycled through experiments ranging from gaming tokens to loyalty programs, generating brief enthusiasm among builders but little durable traction with real users. Consumer-facing narratives were quickly overshadowed by crypto absurdism, culminating in the 2025 memecoin cycle, amplified by a string of viral events including the ‘TRUMP memecoin’. The president’s participation underscored how far speculation had outpaced substance in the public imagination of crypto.​

At Republic, the focus has shifted to longer-lived, fundamental use cases that reach beyond simple “revenue maxing” and tap into more enduring roles for crypto assets. The aim is not to discard speculation entirely but to re-anchor it in systems where incentives drive productive behavior rather than circular hype.

From that vantage point, two themes stand out as particularly important heading into 2026: financial speculation and trading (DeFi), and real-world coordination and infrastructure (DePIN).

DeFi’s Incentive Problem

For most of its history, DeFi has benchmarked success using total value locked (TVL), implicitly equating capital attraction with product-market fit. The playbook was straightforward: design a yield strategy, advertise returns, use deposits to justify new token issuance, and let rising TVL signal “growth.”

For a while, the strategy worked, at least on paper.​ TVL, however, is a blunt and often misleading metric. Capital parked in a protocol is not synonymous with value created by it. Much of that capital circulates through leverage and yield loops instead of funding operations, R&D, or resilient infrastructure. The surface-level numbers look impressive, but the underlying network does not necessarily become stronger. The result is a self-referential system that depends on momentum more than productivity, repeatedly creating short booms that end in sharp contractions when new inflows slow.

In this loop, locked capital creates the appearance of growth while masking structural fragility. Vault balances can climb even as very little capital supports the real costs of running or improving a network. Over time, this hollowness becomes visible in the form of liquidity crises, unsustainable emissions, and reflexive unwinds.

Why Another DeFi Renaissance

The question, then, is why stay constructive on DeFi at all? The answer is that several existential problems remain unresolved and continue to matter. These include:

1. Fragmented and highly mobile liquidity

2. Utility-light or utility-less protocol tokens

3. Commoditized yield that fails to differentiate risk

4. Overleverage and brittle collateral structures

These issues are not unique to DeFi, but DeFi experiences them more acutely and more visibly. They intersect directly with a growing distrust of centralized exchanges and increasingly sophisticated market manipulation, which reinforces a structural need for robust non-custodial financial infrastructure.​

Liquidity Providers => Liquidity ‘Nodes’

Across today’s infrastructure landscape, more than $6 billion are locked in nodes that secure various networks. In that model, node operators stake capital, invest in hardware, and maintain uptime in exchange for protocol rewards and modest transaction fees. The underlying bet is that token prices will appreciate enough for rewards to exceed operating costs and opportunity cost over the long term.​

DeFi, by contrast, has grown out of a culture of commoditized yield. Many participants simply chase the highest advertised “risk-free” returns or rotate into more aggressive vaults promising double-digit yields. To less sophisticated capital, a higher percentage looks like a better outcome regardless of the underlying risk profile. This pattern creates mercenary liquidity that can depart quickly and exacerbate liquidation cascades, leaving protocols exposed when conditions shift.​

A more sustainable design would prioritize “stickier” liquidity positions and reward longer-term alignment. One promising direction is to treat liquidity providers (LPs) more like infrastructure operators and to compensate them with protocol utility tokens in a transparent, rules-based way. In this model, LPs stake tokens and liquidity and meet clear quality criteria, similar to how node operators meet uptime and performance standards. Instead of emissions purely for TVL optics, rewards become tied to the health and resilience of the liquidity base.

Projects such as Flying Tulip push toward this direction by experimenting with redemption-based mechanisms. In that setup, rewarded tokens can be used to reclaim the original principal from a reserve, while selling rewarded tokens forfeits both redemption rights and yield. This approach reframes protocol tokens as risk-bearing claims with embedded downside protection rather than purely speculative assets, creating a more aligned incentive structure between LPs and protocol success.​

The outcome is a more reflexive and healthier relationship between token price, liquidity, and network performance:

• If token price strengthens and yields remain intact, participants benefit both from income and appreciation.

• If token price weakens, yields act as a compensating factor and the system defaults toward a more traditional yield profile rather than collapse.

In this framing, some capital used to acquire and lock protocol tokens will never reappear as raw TVL metrics, but what emerges is more valuable: a committed LP base with clear alignment to long-term network viability.

DePIN As A Practical North Star

Web3’s settlement layers have demonstrated that networks of independent, incentivized participants can maintain shared state reliably over time. That same principle extends beyond ledger maintenance to a broad spectrum of digital infrastructure services. The most compelling argument for decentralization is not only ideological; it is operational. In many cases, a distributed network of providers can deliver better price, resilience, and coverage than a small group of centralized intermediaries.​

Today’s digital infrastructure stack is heavily intermediated. Households and enterprises depend on a small set of oligopolistic providers for connectivity, storage, compute, and content delivery. That structure reinforces price-taking behavior and leaves customers with limited choice. Initiatives like DAWN seek to invert this model by turning unused residential bandwidth into a local marketplace governed by on-chain proofs of location and quality of service. The goal is to reintroduce competition at the household level and chip away at structural markups.​

At the same time, immersive experiences and spatial computing are pushing infrastructure demands far beyond what legacy 2D-optimized systems were designed for Mawari addresses this gap with an Immersive Compute Network that distributes real-time 3D rendering and AI inference across a global network of community-operated GPU nodes, streaming high-quality XR content closer to end users while significantly reducing bandwidth requirements. The project has already powered tens of thousands of hours of live XR streaming and now uses a DePIN model to scale capacity in line with demand.

Reliance on centralized providers also introduces systemic fragility. A major AWS outage in October 2025 was estimated to cost roughly tens of millions of dollars per hour at peak, with total losses clustering around the hundreds of millions and broader ripple effects running into the billions as dependent services went offline. Telecom and network failures more broadly are estimated to cost around 160 billion dollars annually worldwide, underscoring how much value now rides on a small number of core infrastructure providers. A recent Cloudflare incident, which briefly disrupted a significant share of global web traffic including platforms such as X and ChatGPT, highlighted how issues at a single edge network can impose multi-billion-dollar-per-hour downtime costs on affected businesses and applications.

Decentralized wireless projects such as Quantinium attempt to reduce that single-point-of-failure risk by transforming everyday routers into Wi-Fi, 5G, and IoT access points that form a user-owned mesh network. The result is a topology that can degrade gracefully rather than catastrophically when individual nodes drop offline.​

The longer-term vision is straightforward: a world where neighbors are both consumers and providers of digital infrastructure. As more homes and devices come online, capacity scales roughly in line with demand. Projects like DAWN, Mawari, and Quantinium point in the same direction: infrastructure networks that grow organically with participation, with the closest service provider often just next door rather than in a distant data center.

Rethinking DePIN Token Design

Tokens in DePIN systems should exist to coordinate expansion and upgrades, not to mimic the economics of settlement-layer blockchains. In traditional layer-1 networks, token price, staking, and hardware investment often maintain a relatively tight relationship with network security and value stored. Transplanting that model directly into DePIN can be counterproductive. If billions of dollars flow into tokens and nodes that do not deliver in-demand services, the economic foundation erodes and token price should rationally follow.​

This is where conditional or milestone-based token emissions enter. Instead of emitting tokens continuously based on current utilization, a DePIN network can choose to:

1. Launch in one or a few high-priority metropolitan areas.

2. Release new token emissions only as specific geographic or infrastructure milestones are reached.

3. Require each new node in a target market to acquire and stake tokens, partially offsetting emissions.​

The design goals of this approach include:

• Making network growth legible through a clear sequence of expansion events.

• Constraining inflation so that new supply aligns with credible upcoming demand.

• Creating discrete informational milestones that the market can evaluate and price in.

This stands in contrast to “usage-based inflation” models where tokens are minted as a function of current bandwidth utilization or request volume. While these models aim for smoothness and predictability, they often produce unintended consequences:

• Token holders lack clarity about maximum supply over any given time horizon.

• Token price does not move in tight lockstep with incremental usage, because markets price expectations and narratives rather than only current fees.

• Increasing supply when demand is flat or drifting lower weakens the economic foundation instead of reinforcing it.​

Emissions tied to clear, memorable milestones provide a more human-readable roadmap for value accrual. Each new phase of network growth becomes an event around which attention, participation, and capital can coordinate. In that environment, dilution is acknowledged as inevitable, but the focus shifts to maximizing demand at the moments when new supply enters the system.

Ultimately, the key question is not whether tokens are necessary but how they are used. Token design that keeps the informational and psychological dimension of markets front and center is more likely to succeed than designs that assume raw usage metrics alone will carry the narrative.

Where Focus Goes In 2026

The objective is not to predict every twist in the broader crypto market. The focus is on domains where persistent, real-world problems still lack robust solutions. DeFi and DePIN sit at that intersection. Both wrestle with incentive structures that are misaligned with long-term value creation, yet both exhibit durable user demand and clear paths for architectural improvement.​

Across both sectors, token design remains a primary leverage point. Well-calibrated mechanisms can attract aligned participants, distribute risk intelligently, and make systems more resilient to shocks. Poorly calibrated ones can accelerate boom-bust dynamics and concentrate fragility.

With a total market capitalization of over $3 trillion, digital assets may appear vast at first glance. Yet, when compared to established sectors such as global equities or traditional banking, crypto still represents an emerging market that is finding its footing.

On the surface, the data certainly looks impressive. Transaction counts are at all-time highs, stablecoin volumes continue to surge, and user activity in some areas is setting new records.

However, behind these headline figures lies a more important question: how much of this growth represents genuine adoption, and how much is simply noise?

That is what this article seeks to unpack. By looking more closely at the data, we can gain a clearer and fairer understanding of where the industry truly stands, and what these numbers are actually telling us.

Mindshare: The Market’s Shifting Mirage

Not all areas of the crypto market rise equally or for the same reasons. Their momentum is shaped less by fundamentals and more by ‘mindshare’ - the share of collective attention or narrative dominance that a sector commands.

The point here is simple but important. Market narratives shift quickly, and what dominates headlines today may fade within months. Take, for example, the surge of AI tokens, Real World Assets (RWA), and restaking protocols that defined most of Q1 and Q2 of 2025. As we move into Q4, the spotlight has shifted again, this time toward prediction markets and derivatives platforms, which have become the industry’s latest focus.

This constant shift in attention reveals something important. In crypto, attention itself has become a form of capital. Narratives attract liquidity, and liquidity inflates valuations, at least until the next story captures market fascination.

In an industry driven largely by sentiment and momentum, capital often follows what feels popular rather than what creates lasting value. This makes it difficult to tell the difference between true growth and simple rotation.

Are these changing narratives evidence of an industry progressing, or just a faster cycle of collective speculation?

Many long-time participants have understood that sentiment shapes short-term performance. The challenge now is to interpret how this behavior affects broader adoption. In the next sections, we will look at several key indicators such as stablecoin supply, network usage, and DeFi activity to see whether the data reflects genuine progress or simply the movement of capital chasing the next trend. These metrics are often used to gauge growth, but as we will explore later, they only tell part of the story.

Before diving in, it helps to assess each metric on its own terms. When viewed individually, the numbers reveal both the strengths of the industry and the blind spots that often go unnoticed.

1. Stablecoins: The Illusion of Liquidity

Stablecoins, which are tokens pegged to the U.S. dollar or another national currency, are often seen as the market’s fuel. In this context, we focus on the two dominant players, Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC).

The assumption is straightforward. If more stablecoins exist, more capital should be ready to deploy. According to Artemis Analytics, the total stablecoin supply surpassed $305 billion in 2025, tripling since 2023.

Meanwhile, the a16z “State of Crypto 2025” report estimates that stablecoins now facilitate over $46 trillion in annual on-chain transactions, a figure that rivals Visa’s global payment volume.

However, much of this movement may not represent real economic activity.

A significant share is driven by automated trading bots, liquidity balancing, or market-making. These flows often move capital between protocols rather than toward real-world payments or commerce.

Liquidity, yes. Utility, questionable.

2. Network Usage: Scale Without Stickiness

Liquidity tells us what is available.

Network usage shows us what people actually do with it.

Data from L2BEAT shows that Layer 2 networks now process the majority of Ethereum’s daily transactions while using only a small portion of its total gas fees. On the surface, this points to genuine progress: faster, cheaper, and more efficient infrastructure.

2.1 Developer Activity: Building Through the Downturn

To understand whether this rising activity is backed by real innovation, it helps to look at the people building the technology. Data from Electric Capital’s Developer Report depicted in the chart below, shows that more than 31,000 monthly active developers contribute to major blockchain ecosystems in 2025, far above pre-2021 levels.

This commitment suggests that the sector’s innovation engine remains strong, even during quieter markets.

2.2 User Activity: Adoption Without Retention

But strong developer ecosystems do not always translate into sticky user behavior. Studies show that 70%- 80%of users stop engaging with most dapps within a few weeks. Participation often falls by 20%-40% once incentive programs end.

This indicates that much of the observed usage may be temporary or incentive-driven. The infrastructure is scaling, but long-term user commitment remains limited. Scalability is no longer the main challenge. Sustainability is.

3. DeFi Metrics: TVL’s Double-Counting Problem

If stablecoins measure liquidity and network usage measures activity, then Total Value Locked (TVL) is often seen as the measure of DeFi’s scale. The assumption is simple: more assets locked in smart contracts means a healthier ecosystem.

However, the reality is more complex. Lending markets currently show a base TVL of about $71.6 billion but when borrowed assets are included, that figure rises to $112 billion. Across all DeFi protocols, total TVL sits at roughly $138.9 billion, with $42.2 billion currently borrowed.

The issue is that TVL can be inflated. Practices like yield-looping, where borrowed funds are repeatedly re-deposited into related protocols, can make the same dollar appear several times over. Some protocols report gross deposits, others report net deposits, making comparisons inconsistent.

As one analysis thread on X pointed out, headline TVL often overstates both the size and the health of these systems. TVL measures how much money is locked, not how much value is being created.

If one dollar can appear multiple times across protocols, is that growth, or simply leverage looping disguised as expansion?

Institutional Signals: Manufactured Optics

Inflated metrics are not limited to DeFi or on-chain activity. Similar distortions appear at the institutional level, where reported figures often blur the line between real participation and performance signaling. In other words, the challenge is not only within protocols but also in how markets present themselves.

Artificial Activity: The Wash Trading Problem

A recent report estimated that wash trading on select blockchains accounts for up to $2.57 billion in reported trading volume. Research from Columbia University reached a similar conclusion, finding that around 25% of all activity on Polymarket, one of the fastest-growing prediction markets, could be classified as artificial or “self-referential” trading.

This highlights a deeper issue: volume as performance art.

The appearance of liquidity helps maintain confidence, even when genuine participation is much lower. Wash trading may not inflate TVL or protocol metrics directly, but it reinforces the broader illusion that rising numbers always signal growth.

Taken together, the data across stablecoins, network usage, DeFi activity, and market behavior reveals a consistent pattern. The industry produces large amounts of movement, but not all of it reflects meaningful adoption. Recognizing these gaps is not a setback; it is an important step forward. It clarifies where progress is real and where it is simply noise. With this perspective, the path toward healthier and more honest measures of growth becomes easier to see.

Conclusion: Measuring Progress With Clearer Eyes

The data may be noisy, but the story it reveals is not. The industry’s reliance on headline metrics has exposed its own blind spots, yet acknowledging these shortcomings is an essential part of progress. By understanding where traditional indicators fall short, the sector is better positioned to rethink how it measures traction and long-term value.

There is meaningful progress beneath the surface. Builders continue to ship, networks continue to evolve, and the foundations for more resilient systems are taking shape. The next step is to shift focus toward metrics that reflect lasting impact rather than temporary activity.

Indicators such as protocol revenue, fee generation, and durable user engagement provide a clearer signal of where value is being created and where it is merely circulating.

If the early phase of crypto was shaped by experimentation and excitement, the next phase will be shaped by understanding. As the industry moves beyond headline figures and begins to prioritize substance, it can chart a healthier and more honest path forward.

Crypto may still be in its early days, but it is learning to measure itself with clearer eyes. That alone is a sign of progress, and it opens the door to a more meaningful story of growth.

Introduction

A new class of public companies is emerging with a singular focus: accumulating cryptocurrency as a core treasury asset. These Digital Asset Treasury Companies (DATCOs) raise capital through traditional markets and deploy it directly into digital assets.

What began as an unconventional balance sheet experiment is now a multi-billion-dollar trend spanning Bitcoin, Ethereum, and a growing list of altcoins; reshaping market dynamics, tightening supply, and giving investors new ways to gain crypto exposure.

The concept might feel new, but the logic is familiar. Just as corporations once stockpiled gold to hedge against inflation and currency debasement, today’s DATCOs are positioning digital assets as the next strategic reserve. They borrow tactics from both corporate finance and crypto-native strategies, creating a hybrid model that’s as innovative as it is controversial.

The Digital Asset Treasury Companies (DATCO) Formula

Bitcoin paved the way for corporate crypto treasuries. The turning point came in 2020, when Michael Saylor’s MicroStrategy began converting cash reserves into BTC. At the time, it was a bold departure from tradition: corporate treasuries have typically favored safe, liquid assets such as cash, bonds, or short-term securities. Bitcoin, with its volatility and regulatory uncertainty, sat firmly outside that comfort zone.

Yet the gamble reshaped the landscape. Today, around 115 institutions across 29 countries collectively hold nearly 1.5 million BTC, valued at more than $167 billion. This represents roughly 7.1% of Bitcoin’s total supply, underscoring the growing role of corporate and institutional treasuries in the market. But the distribution is far from equal. According to Coingecko's Bitcoin Treasury Holdings data, MicroStrategy alone controls about 63.2% of all Bitcoin owned by public companies, a position that dwarfs every other corporate holder. This imbalance is captured in the chart below, which ranks the top 10 public companies by Bitcoin holdings and highlights MicroStrategy’s dominance.

DATCOs don’t just buy Bitcoin with excess profits. They raise capital through share offerings, bonds, or convertible notes. They then deploy those funds directly into crypto. Because these companies often trade at a premium to their net asset value (NAV), essentially, the market value of the coins they hold, they can issue shares above NAV and use the proceeds to buy more BTC. This “NAV arbitrage” increases the BTC per share for existing investors.

If that sounds abstract, think of it like this: if a company’s stock price is trading higher than the actual value of its Bitcoin holdings, issuing new shares brings in more cash than the Bitcoin they’d otherwise need to sell to match that value. They use that cash to buy more Bitcoin, so every shareholder ends up owning a bigger slice of the total BTC pie.

The attraction for institutional investors is clear. Many are restricted from buying spot Bitcoin or ETFs due to compliance rules. Owning stock in a publicly traded Bitcoin treasury company offers a compliant workaround. Before gold ETFs existed, gold miners played a similar role for investors seeking exposure to the precious metal.

Some DATCOs have become so aggressive that their purchases visibly move markets. While most corporate buys contribute modestly to daily price changes, Keyrock research shows that Strategy’s largest acquisitions have coincided with multi-percent intraday jumps. In late 2024, one of its billion-dollar buying sprees was credited with helping push Bitcoin to new all-time highs. According to Keyrock, most small Treasury purchases only contributed to 0.59% of daily price impact on average. But some of the big Strategy purchases do impact the market heavily. Just before EOY 24’, they'd contributed ~9.05% to price impact.

Looking ahead, it’s not just companies but also jurisdictions that matter. A view of Bitcoin holdings by country further illustrates where this concentration lies, with the US far ahead of other regions.

This geographic tilt highlights how regulation, governance, and market access will shape the next chapter of DATCO strategies.

Ethereum and the New Wave of Altcoin Treasuries

If Bitcoin proved the model works, Ethereum is showing how it can evolve. Unlike Bitcoin, Ethereum offers more than blue-chip status: it’s a yield-bearing asset through staking. By locking ETH into the network, holders earn additional ETH over time while simultaneously helping to secure the blockchain. For a corporate treasury, that’s a compelling combination…a hard asset that also generates income.

Just a year ago, corporate ETH holdings were barely on the radar. Today, 11 companies collectively hold over 3 million ETH, valued at more than $14.5 billion. Two names dominate this shift.

• BitMine Immersion shocked the market by acquiring 1.72M ETH (~$7+B) in just over a month. Almost all of it is staked, generating steady rewards, positioning the firm as the largest corporate holder of ETH. And as of recently, the company filed to sell up to $24.5 billion worth of stock in order to fund more Ethereum purchases.

• SharpLink Gaming follows a similar playbook. As of August 31, 2025, it holds 837,230 ETH (~$3.7+B), funding its accumulation through at-the-market share sales and reporting performance in terms of “ETH per share”.

Both companies are essentially applying the Bitcoin treasury playbook to Ethereum, but with the added compounding effect of staking rewards. This means that even without new capital raises, their holdings can grow organically over time.

The momentum is spreading. FG Nexus has filed to raise up to $5B for an ETH-focused treasury, signaling continued appetite. The speed of accumulation is striking: in some cases, these companies have bought more ETH in weeks than the Ethereum Foundation itself holds.

Ethereum’s success has also opened the door to other blockchains. Solana has attracted firms like Upexi and DeFi Development Corp, which together hold close to 4 million worth of SOL. Upexi even secured a $500M credit line specifically for Solana purchases. The expansion doesn’t stop there. In Chainlink’s case, real estate asset manager Caliber invested $40M into LINK, a move that drove its stock up nearly 80%. Litecoin gained its first corporate backer in MEI Pharma, which bought nearly a million LTC. The deal came with advice from Litecoin creator Charlie Lee himself, underscoring the legitimacy play. Even Dogecoin has entered the corporate treasury arena: backed by the Dogecoin Foundation and House of Doge, CleanCore committed $175M and by doing so becoming the first public company to adopt DOGE, a meme, as a strategic asset. The announcement, however, shocked markets and sent CleanCore’s shares tumbling 52%.

Newer blockchains are also in the mix. Mill City Ventures made a $450M move into SUI, supported by the Sui Foundation, marking the first Nasdaq-listed SUI treasury. Early signs of activity are also appearing in Bittensor’s TAO, Binance’s BNB, and others.

• For assets like Ethereum or Solana, the effect can be even more pronounced when holdings are staked, locking them up not just for storage, but for active participation in network security. The staking yields provide an income stream, helping offset operating costs and adding to the asset base over time.

• For investors unable to hold crypto directly, DATCOs offer a compliant, regulated equity vehicle for exposure, much like gold mining stocks did for gold before ETFs existed. When shares trade at a premium to the value of their holdings, DATCOs can raise fresh capital at favorable terms, increasing the number of coins each share represents, a compounding effect that benefits existing shareholders.

Risks:

• The risks are just as significant as the opportunities. Many DATCOs depend heavily on uninterrupted access to capital markets. In favorable conditions, this can fuel rapid growth; in a downturn, it can quickly become a liability. If valuations fall or funding dries up, companies may be forced to sell assets or raise capital on highly dilutive terms.

A high-profile example: a proposed $1.5 billion Solana treasury initiative tied to investor Joe McCann was reportedly scrapped following backlash tied to his fund’s underperformance. For all their promise, DATCOs are not a one-way bet. They are complex, high-risk financial vehicles operating at the intersection of volatile assets, investor psychology, and evolving regulation.

General Secretary Tô Lâm emphasized the urgency of this shift in a 2025 directive to the Politburo, stating:

Shortly thereafter, the National Assembly passed the Digital Technology Industry Law, introducing legal definitions for digital assets, tokens, and blockchain infrastructure, and enabling use cases across finance, identity, and enterprise systems.

In a regional first, and as of June 2025, Vietnam passed a law officially recognizing crypto assets, making it the first Southeast Asian country to establish a comprehensive legal framework for digital assets, thus positioning itself as a regulatory leader in the region.

If regulation provides the tailwind, then Vietnam’s emerging International Financial Centers (IFCs) in Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang may represent an important structural step forward. Rather than retrofitting legacy systems, these IFCs are being developed with a digitally native financial ecosystem in mind.

Current proposals for these centers include regulatory sandbox environments, tokenization pilots, frameworks for stablecoins, and infrastructure to support digital asset issuance and exchange. This approach reflects Vietnam’s broader ambition: to build a dual-center financial framework that not only modernizes the national system, but also positions the country to compete for global capital in the next era of finance. Deputy Prime Minister Nguyễn Hòa Bình highlighted this strategic direction, noting:

While still early, these developments suggest that Vietnam is not only preparing to regulate digital assets, it’s investing in the foundational infrastructure to participate more actively in the global digital economy.

Proof in Action: Users, Builders, and Market Momentum

From 2023 to date, Vietnam ranked top 3 globally in the Global Crypto Adoption Index, according to Chainalysis and a recent report released by Coinlaw. Reflecting strong grassroots engagement in DeFi, peer-to-peer trading, and on-chain activity, particularly among users under the age of 35.

Notably, this level of adoption emerged despite a restrictive environment. At the time, Vietnam had no licensed domestic exchanges; mostly actively occurred on decentralized platforms. Government regulations prohibited events discussing token sales, launches, or investment related topics, limiting formal industry development. The strength of user participation in such conditions showcases the demand and resilience of the local crypto community.

An estimated 21.2% of Vietnam’s population, that’s approximately 20 million people, own or use cryptocurrency. A Triple-A report also placed Vietnam third among emerging economies for overall adoption, as shown in the chart below.

Vietnam’s mobile-first, digitally native population is driving widespread engagement with tools like decentralized exchanges, NFTs, and DAO platforms, which, as the Chainalysis report highlights, are becoming part of everyday digital behavior.

During our visit to Vietnam in 2024, we observed this firsthand across a variety of everyday settings. At a local pickleball tournament, for example, a wedding planner casually pulled up a DEX on her phone to trade WIF. This kind of on-the-ground usage, happening outside formal financial environments, shows just how digitally fluent and self-driven the community is even without licensed exchanges or clear regulations.

A Growing Developer Ecosystem

This widespread user adoption is reflected on the development side as well. Vietnam now ranks second in Asia for active Web3 developers, with approximately 10,000 blockchain engineers, trailing only India, according to Tiger Research. On-chain data further indicates that Vietnam leads the region in developer activity, followed by the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia, as shown in the chart below.

Local firms such as Sotatek, Orochi Network, and Verichain have played a growing role in delivering blockchain infrastructure and application-layer solutions for international clients, ranging from testnet environments to full mainnet deployments. This export-ready technical capacity has made Vietnam increasingly attractive to global Layer 1 ecosystems.

Both Aptos and Sui have recently launched developer-focused initiatives in Vietnam, including localized hackathons (Aptos Hackathon | Sui Hackathon) and training programs designed to engage local engineers and accelerate ecosystem growth. These programs highlight a strategic shift toward Vietnam as a regional hub for protocol-level talent and community building.

While Vietnam’s developer landscape is still maturing, these early signals suggest it could play an increasingly important role in the development and scaling of blockchain applications across Southeast Asia and beyond.

Back in 2018–2019, major banks like Vietcombank, MB Bank, and Techcombank quietly piloted blockchain in areas such as cross-border payments (via RippleNet), trade finance smart contracts, and digital identity (eKYC). These early experiments weren’t about tokenization or speculation. They were early experiments in using distributed ledgers to modernize existing financial infrastructure.

In the years that followed, regulatory caution primarily driven by consumer protection slowed public blockchain activity, particularly around token-related initiatives.

Fast forward to today, and the context has shifted. With the draft of Vietnam's Digital Asset Law in progress and sandbox frameworks emerging, the conversation has re-opened. This time it’s about how blockchain technology could support Vietnam’s long-term economic strategy. This shift is prompting renewed interest from large enterprises. Players like SSI Digital Holdings, Sovico Group, Techcombank, and Dragon Capital are exploring blockchain initiatives, this time with a broader vision tied to capital markets, infrastructure, and digital assets.

One of the most active new entrants in Vietnam’s Web3 landscape is SSID (Sovico Strategic Investment & Development), a blockchain-native arm under Sovico Group. Over the past 12 months, SSID has moved quickly: it acquired U2U Network, a Layer-1 blockchain project, launched SSID Ventures to back early-stage Web3 startups, and became a key co-organizer of Vietnam Blockchain Week in collaboration with GM Vietnam.

The most recent striking news in the Ethereum ecosystem has been gaming firm SharpLink’s announcement of a $425 million ETH reserve. By not only acquiring a massive ETH position but also installing ConsenSys founder Joseph Lubin as board chairman, SharpLink reframed Ethereum to a strategic reserve asset.

The company’s move—mirrored by others like BioNexus Gene Lab and BTCS Inc—is more than a balance sheet maneuver; it’s a signal of ideological alignment with Ethereum’s vision of the future. After publicly announcing the acquisition, the company had a 472% rise in its marketcap.

However, SharpLink’s approach goes beyond holding ETH. By staking its holdings, the company participates in Ethereum’s proof-of-stake consensus, earning yield and further reducing ETH’s circulating supply. This mechanism, unavailable to Bitcoin holders, transforms ETH from a passive store of value into an active, yield-generating reserve. This is reminiscent of Bitcoin’s rise as a sovereign reserve, but ETH’s programmability and staking yield introduce a new dimension. Companies are not just storing value—they’re participating in the network’s security and earning returns.

Market Validation and Institutional Demand

ETH’s new status as a reserve currency is being validated not just by private firms but also through asset management institutions. US spot Ethereum ETFs have seen strong inflows, with BlackRock’s iShares Ethereum Trust leading the way.

Major banks and investment houses are increasingly viewing ETH as both a store of value and a productive asset, with some analysts even describing it as “fundamentally mispriced” given its robust on-chain activity and growing adoption. But what’s driving this surge of institutional interest in ETH now? The answer goes beyond simply following Bitcoin’s reserve playbook—it lies in Ethereum’s unique ability to power the next generation of DeFi applications and stablecoin innovation, setting the stage for a broader transformation in institutional finance.

How are institutions catching on?

Crypto funds saw $785 million in inflows over five weeks, with Ethereum accounting for $205 million—its strongest showing of the year.

CoinShares also reports that Ethereum leads with $296.4m in inflows—marking its strongest run since December 2024.

Powering DeFi and Institutional Stablecoin Adoption

Ethereum has firmly established itself as the foundation of DeFi and the premier platform for stablecoin activity. In April 2025, Ethereum’s on-chain stablecoin transaction volume reached an all-time high of $908 billion, driven primarily by USDC, USDT, DAI, and emerging institutional stablecoins like USD1. This record-setting figure reflects both strong institutional adoption and the integration of stablecoins into mainstream payment solutions by companies such as Meta and Stripe.

As stablecoins continue to mature and gain mainstream acceptance, the next wave of institutional adoption is poised to unfold within the DeFi sector—and Ethereum is uniquely positioned to lead this transformation.

Currently, Ethereum leads as the dominant chain for DeFi, with over $67B in total value locked (TVL) according to DefiLlama.

Ethereum also dominated in the market of real-world asset (RWA) TVL, with $9.78 billion locked—making up the majority of the $12B + held across DeFi (see chart below):

One of Ethereum’s most significant innovations is its staking model, which allows companies and institutions to actively participate in network security while putting their assets to work. This transforms ETH from a passive holding into a productive asset, aligning the interests of investors, enterprises, and the network itself. Staking not only enhances security but also encourages long-term engagement from institutional participants.

BlackRock, one of the world’s largest asset managers, has recently shifted a significant portion of its crypto portfolio—moving over $560 million worth of Bitcoin to Coinbase and purchasing approximately $95 million in Ethereum. This aligns with the SEC’s announcement that staking services do not constitute securities, which has removed a major source of uncertainty for institutions. As more traditional finance and fintech giants embrace Ethereum for its programmability, compliance, and maturing ecosystem, the network is experiencing record levels of usage across key sectors.

To support this institutional interest, the Ethereum Foundation has launched the Trillion Dollar Security (1TS) initiative, focused on auditing and upgrading the Ethereum stack to ensure it can safely secure institutional-scale capital.

Together, these developments point to a maturing narrative: Ethereum is no longer just a platform for innovation—it’s positioning itself as institutional-grade infrastructure, ready to support trillions in digital assets.

ETH’s Recent Price Rally and On-Chain Momentum

While ETH has rallied sharply in recent weeks, it’s worth noting that Ethereum has lagged behind Bitcoin in price performance for much of the past two years. According to data from VanEck (see chart below), following the 2021 bull market, Bitcoin recovered faster amid institutional ETF approvals and global macro uncertainty. Ethereum, meanwhile, fell behind—dropping approximately 50% by early 2025, while Bitcoin remained more resilient.

However, the past few months mark a potential shift: Ethereum has begun to outperform Bitcoin—gaining nearly 30% over two sessions ending May 9, according to CryptoSlate—following a prolonged downtrend in the ETH/BTC pair since 2022.

This price action appears to be reinforced by on-chain data, which points to a broader shift in sentiment:

1. ETH supply on centralized exchanges has dropped to a 10-year low of just 4.9%, according to Santiment, while CryptoRank data shows that over 1 million ETH has been withdrawn in the past month alone.

2. Whale wallets (holding over 10,000 ETH) have accumulated 450,000 ETH since late April (see X post below), now controlling over 40.75 million ETH.

These movements further indicate that major holders are shifting ETH into long-term storage or staking, reducing liquid supply and signaling confidence in future price appreciation.

Ethereum’s Fragmentation Issue

The rapid adoption of Layer 2 (L2) solutions—such as Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base—has been instrumental in scaling Ethereum, drastically reducing transaction costs and increasing throughput across the ecosystem. However, this success has introduced a new set of challenges: liquidity fragmentation and weakened value accrual to Ethereum’s base layer. With over 50 L2s now live or in development, users and capital are increasingly dispersed across isolated networks, making the Ethereum ecosystem feel more like a maze of separate chains than a unified platform.

Liquidity fragmentation presents significant hurdles for both users and developers. For users, interacting with DeFi protocols often means navigating multiple networks, bridging assets, and managing additional transaction steps—each introducing friction, delays, and potential security risks. For developers, the need to support and maintain applications across several L2s adds complexity and raises operational costs, diverting resources from innovation to infrastructure management. As a result, capital becomes trapped in silos, reducing overall market efficiency and making it harder for DeFi protocols to maintain deep, unified liquidity pools.

This fragmentation also impacts Ethereum’s economic model. As more transaction execution moves off-chain to L2s, a smaller share of transaction fees and value accrues to Ethereum’s mainnet. While L2s periodically settle batches of transactions on Ethereum, the majority of fees and MEV (maximal extractable value) are retained by the L2s themselves rather than flowing back to ETH holders or validators. This shift has sparked debate over whether Ethereum’s long-term value proposition could be undermined if incentives for securing and maintaining the base layer diminish.

Despite these challenges, the assets locked across L2s—over $25 billion as of April 2025—represent untapped potential. Industry efforts are now focused on developing interoperability standards, cross-chain liquidity layers, and abstracted user interfaces to help unify the ecosystem. Solutions such as ERC-7683 and new cross-chain protocols aim to make it easier for users and capital to move seamlessly between L2s, reducing friction and unlocking greater utility from existing assets. Ultimately, addressing these fragmentation issues will be crucial for sustaining Ethereum’s leadership in DeFi and ensuring that both value and incentives continue to flow throughout the ecosystem.

ETH as the New Reserve Asset of Wall Street

Ethereum’s evolution from a programmable blockchain to a reserve currency for tech companies marks a new chapter in digital finance. As more firms follow SharpLink’s lead—staking, integrating, and signaling allegiance to Ethereum’s protocol—the reflexive feedback loop is likely to accelerate. This is not just a financial trend, but a shift in how capital “votes” for the protocols that will underpin the next era of the internet.

For Founders: A Different Playbook

There’s real appetite for innovation in the Middle East—but it comes with a different playbook. Unlike in the West, where capital can follow a single meeting, funding here flows through relationships, consistency, and strategic alignment—not pitch decks. Cultural fit often matters more than product-market fit.

A common misstep: assuming the goal is to raise directly from government entities. But government capital isn’t venture funding—it’s tied to long-term, GDP-aligned outcomes. If you're not planning to relocate, build locally, or create jobs in the region, you're unlikely to fit the mandate.

ETFs are popular for their diversification, lower fees, and ease of trading. They often track specific sectors, indexes, or asset classes. While generally efficient and accessible, ETFs can still carry risks related to market volatility, fund structure, or taxation.

In this article, we look at the growing role of ETFs in the crypto space—focusing especially on Bitcoin ETFs and how they’re reshaping access to digital assets, along with a look at Ethereum and other emerging crypto-based ETFs.

What Are Bitcoin ETFs?

Bitcoin ETFs are investment products that allow individuals and institutions to gain exposure to Bitcoin’s price movements—without actually owning or managing the cryptocurrency directly. These are known as spot Bitcoin ETFs because they are backed by real Bitcoin held in custody by the fund.

Bitcoin 101: Understanding the Asset Behind the ETF

Bitcoin–trading at approximately $101,000+ at the time of writing—is a decentralized digital currency that allows users to send and receive value over the internet without relying on a central authority such as a bank or government. Launched in 2009, it was the first cryptocurrency ever created and remains the most widely recognized and valuable today.

Often described as “digital gold,” Bitcoin is known for its fixed supply—only 21 million coins will ever exist. Its underlying technology, the blockchain, is a public ledger that records all transactions in a transparent, tamper-resistant way. This makes Bitcoin both a store of value and a medium of exchange, appealing to both long-term investors and those interested in the broader crypto ecosystem.

In practical terms, a Bitcoin ETF works just like a traditional ETF that tracks assets like the S&P 500 or gold. When investors buy shares of a Bitcoin ETF, the fund issues new shares and typically acquires an equivalent amount of Bitcoin to back those shares, aligning with the purchase demand. By owning shares in the ETF, investors receive a corresponding interest to a portion of Bitcoin held by the fund. The value of ETF shares are designed to move in line with the market price of the underlying asset, such as Bitcoin.

This model provides a simplified, regulated path for investors to participate in the Bitcoin market using familiar financial tools, like brokerage accounts, without the need for digital wallets, private keys, or crypto exchanges.

Currently, Bitcoin ETFs are available in a number of countries, however, the US leads the market, capturing 83% of global spot Bitcoin ETF assets, which totaled more than $35 billion as of early 2024.

Bitcoin ETF Approval: A Turning Point for Crypto

A pivotal moment came on January 10, 2024, when the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved 11 spot Bitcoin ETFs in a single decision. Among the approved issuers were major financial players such as BlackRock, Fidelity, Grayscale, Invesco, VanEck, and Bitwise.

Since their launch in early 2024, spot Bitcoin ETFs have seen strong momentum, with early inflows topping $6 billion. While inflows cooled mid-year and briefly turned negative in early 2025, the overall trend has remained positive. Over the past two months, inflows have rebounded, signaling renewed investor confidence. As of May 2025, total ETF assets stand at over $118 billion—reflecting growing institutional participation in the space (see chart below).

The launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs is widely regarded as a landmark moment for the crypto industry—a breakthrough that not only signaled regulatory acceptance but also marked a major step toward the mainstream integration of digital assets within traditional finance. For many, it represents one of the most successful and meaningful bridges between crypto and Wall Street to date.

Bitcoin ETFs: Where Are We Today?

As of May 9, 2025, the growth of Bitcoin ETFs continues to accelerate, as shared by Coinglass Bitcoin ETF Stats data:

• Total Assets Under Management (AUM): $120.63 billion

• Total Market Capitalization: $123.32 billion

• Average Daily Trading Volume: $1.33 billion

In addition to the raw numbers, there’s a clear upward trend in Bitcoin ETF market capitalization as these products mature and gain broader adoption. This continued growth is visually reflected in the market cap chart shown below, highlighting the long-term potential of the space.

One of the most striking developments is the rapid pace of growth. In just three trading days, Bitcoin ETFs saw nearly $1.4 billion in inflows—driving the price from around $85,000 to beyond the $100,000 mark. This surge highlights not just sustained interest but accelerating momentum in the market.

The market leader among these products is BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), which at the time of writing, holds over 621.60K BTC, valued at more than $64.43 billion.

On April 28, 2025, IBIT recorded $970.9 million in inflows—its second-highest daily total since launch—while rivals like Fidelity’s FBTC and ARK’s ARKB experienced notable outflows.

Overall, this surge in capital and activity signals growing confidence in Bitcoin ETFs and strengthens the argument made by many investors and analysts alike: Bitcoin ETFs are still in their early stages, with substantial room to grow as adoption expands.

Ethereum ETFs: A New Chapter in Crypto Investing

Just like their Bitcoin counterparts, Ethereum ETFs offer investors a way to gain exposure to the price of Ethereum—the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency—within a regulated, traditional investment framework. These funds track the market value of Ethereum without requiring investors to hold, manage, or secure the asset themselves.

Following the success of spot Bitcoin ETFs, Ethereum was the next logical step. In August 2024, the SEC approved eight spot Ethereum ETFs, issued by major asset managers including BlackRock, Fidelity, Grayscale, Bitwise, VanEck, Ark, Invesco Galaxy, and Franklin Templeton.

As of May 9, 2025, Coinglass Ethereum ETF Stats shows the market standing at:

• Market Capitalization: $8.39 billion

• Total AUM (Assets Under Management): $9.04 billion

• Daily Trading Volume: Over $326.11 million

The Next Big Thing: Staking Within Ethereum ETFs

What makes Ethereum ETFs particularly compelling is not just their growth—but the innovation they’re potentially about to unlock: staking.

What is staking?
Staking involves locking up cryptocurrency to help secure a blockchain network that uses a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism—like Ethereum. In return, participants earn rewards, typically paid in the same token they stake.

For instance, Ethereum users who stake ETH to validate transactions and support network operations receive additional ETH as compensation.

Several major asset managers, including Grayscale, have submitted proposals to the SEC to allow staking directly within Ethereum ETFs. If approved, this would let investors earn staking rewards—similar to interest—on top of price exposure to ETH, offering both growth and passive income potential.

While the SEC recently delayed decisions on two of Grayscale’s staking-enabled Ethereum ETF proposals, there’s growing optimism. Markets in Canada, Hong Kong, and Europe have already green-lighted staking in ETF structures, setting a precedent. And with the recent appointment of Paul Atkins as SEC Chair—who is viewed as more crypto-friendly—many expect progress in the US to follow sooner rather than later.

Beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum: The Next Wave of Crypto ETFs

While Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs have captured most of the headlines, they are only the beginning. As the ETF model proves successful in crypto’s two largest assets, demand is growing rapidly for more diversified crypto ETF offerings.

To date, only Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs have received approval from the SEC. However, a wide range of other cryptocurrency ETFs are now in the pipeline—highlighting growing interest from both investors and issuers.

In total, more than 70 crypto ETF proposals are currently under review by the SEC, representing projects like SUI, Solana, TRON, Polkadot, Hedera, and several crypto index products.

Among the most notable pending applications are Solana ($SOL), Ripple ($XRP), and, more recently, a TRON ($TRON) ETF with staking capabilities filed by Canary Capital. Other proposals—such as those for Dogecoin ($DOGE), Polkadot ($DOT) and Hedera ($HBAR)—have already received delays on the SEC’s decision.

With continued activity across ETF filings, it’s evident that the crypto ETF market is in a phase of expansion. Should staking-enabled products gain regulatory approval, they could introduce a broader and more diverse set of digital asset offerings for investors to consider.

The Regulatory Shift Behind Crypto ETF Momentum

Interest in crypto ETFs is rising alongside shifts in both US and global regulatory environments.

In the US—which holds the largest share of the digital asset market—the SEC has recently adopted a more open stance, dropping several lawsuits against crypto firms and initiating public discussions around industry regulation (see our previous article for more). The agency’s new chair, Paul Atkins, has voiced support for digital assets and expressed a desire to collaborate with lawmakers on a formal regulatory framework.

Internationally, countries like South Korea are also moving toward crypto ETF adoption. Its ruling party has pledged to approve spot crypto ETFs and ease banking restrictions if re-elected—just one example of the broader global shift toward regulated digital asset investment.

As regulation evolves, crypto ETFs are becoming a more accessible, compliant gateway for investors—combining traditional finance structures with exposure to digital assets.

Crypto ETFs: Advantages and Trade-Offs

While ETFs offer a streamlined way for investors to gain exposure to cryptocurrency and simplify access, they come with important trade-offs.

• Easy Access: Buy and sell through regular brokerage accounts—no crypto-specific setup required.

• Reduced Complexity: No need to manage private keys or navigate crypto wallets.

   To access Quantum Wi-Fi, users can choose from subscription plans, day passes, or pay-as-you-go options. They can join the network in one of two ways:

   • Quantinium Wallet (Q Wallet): Enables users to create a self-custodial wallet to manage QTI and other cryptocurrencies, which can be used to purchase airtime.

   • Q Subscriber App: Allows users to sign up with a simple email and password. Payments can be made in fiat, and a crypto wallet which is created in the background with transaction signing abstracted away from the user. This enables non-web3-savvy user demographic to benefit from Quantum Wi-Fi.

3. L1 Blockchain Infrastructure

   Quantinium is being developed as a Layer 1 blockchain on Avalanche (formerly referred to as subnets). This approach combines the security of Avalanche’s validator network with the flexibility to tailor the blockchain for the high speed and throughput needed to support Quantinium’s scale. Key functions such as payments, rewards, and other financial transactions will be verified and settled directly on-chain.

As of the time of writing, tariff tensions between the US and China remain high, with the US tariff on Chinese goods rising from 54% to 245%, while China’s tariff on US imports has climbed from 34% to 84%, and then to 125%.

So, what was the rationale behind the move? Five clear reasons were laid out:

1. Fairer Trade Terms – “Our country has been looted… pillaged… and plundered by nations near and far,” Trump claimed, positioning the tariffs as a necessary correction to decades of trade imbalance.

2. Reviving Domestic Industry – “Jobs and factories will come roaring back” presenting the tariffs as a catalyst for American reindustrialization.

3. Taking a Stand Against China – “They were taking tremendous advantage of us,” Trump asserted, directly naming China as a primary target.

4. Reducing the National Debt – Tariff revenue, he argued, would help pay down national debt and cut taxes.

5. Lowering Consumer Prices Over Time – Through reshoring and renewed domestic competition, he predicted “a golden age of America” with ultimately lower prices for consumers.

The Market Fallout: Trillions Lost in Days

Markets reacted with immediate and sharp declines following the announcement of the ‘tariff war,’ reflecting widespread investor concern over escalating trade tensions. By April 3, over $2.85 trillion was wiped out in a single trading day—the worst in four years.

By April 4, China struck back with 34% tariffs on U.S. goods, triggering an additional $3.25 trillion in losses. And by April 7, more chaos hit all markets. The S&P 500 officially entered bear market territory, falling 21.25% from its highs. In total, more than $10 trillion in market value had evaporated in under a week.

Bond markets also felt the impact, with yields moving sharply as investors reacted to the heightened uncertainty. For instance, yields on 30-year U.S. treasuries jumped 12 bps to 4.835% the biggest 3-day jump since 1982, signaling deep investor anxiety and rising expectations of long-term inflation or instability.

By April 9, the entire escalation reached new heights. China’s tariffs had surged to 84% on U.S. imports. In response, Trump hit back with a staggering 125% tariff on Chinese goods.

So what looked like a geo-political tool was quickly turned into a full-blown trade war morphed into full-scale economic warfare. Leading to an even more pronounced market uncertainty.

Underscored by the volatility index (VIX)—Wall Street’s so-called “fear gauge”—soared past 60, its highest closing level since the 2020 COVID crash.

And, Wall street, where JPMorgan called the tariff package the largest U.S. tax hike since 1968, and projected a 60% chance of recession within the year.

Despite the chaos, a surprising countertrend emerged, namely, retail investors poured $4.7 billion into the market—marking the largest daily inflow in a decade.

It was a striking contrast: institutional players were running for cover, while everyday investors saw an opportunity.

Bitcoin: Volatile, But Resilient?

While global stock markets were in freefall, Bitcoin—typically known for its volatility—showed a surprising level of resilience.

At first, the leading cryptocurrency wasn’t immune to the macro panic. By April 6, Bitcoin fell below $78,000, and by April 7, it had dipped under $75,000—its lowest point during the crisis.

Despite the $200 million in crypto liquidations that hit the market— all within a matter of 60 minutes—Bitcoin began rebounding quickly.

To sum it up, while U.S. equities experienced their sharpest drop since 1957, Bitcoin saw a decline of about 15.8%—falling from a peak of around $88,400 on April 2 to a low of $74,400 on April 7. However, it bounced back quickly, at a pace so impressive that even veteran crypto investors found it remarkable, as shown in the chart below.

However, this resilience doesn’t seem to be just technical but rather narrative-driven. According to VanEck’s Matthew Sigel, Bitcoin is “evolving from a speculative asset into a functional monetary tool.”

And that evolution was on full display, marked by both China and Russia cross-border transaction settlement in Bitcoin. Signaling not only its rising utility in bypassing traditional financial systems but also a bold step that underscored its growing geopolitical relevance.

Negotiations and the Political Fallout

Despite the turbulence, Trump’s aggressive tariff strategy did move the diplomatic needle. By April 6, more than 50 entities, including India, Vietnam, and European Union, to name a few, had reached out to open negotiations for new trade agreements. That number ballooned to 130 countries by April 13, according to the White House.

Still, the administration held firm. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick doubled down, stating: “The President needs to reset global trade,” and promising the return of “trillions of dollars of factories” to U.S. soil.

But while diplomacy picked up, the trade war with China escalated further.

• China raised tariffs on U.S. goods to 84%, then 125%.

• Trump initially imposed a 125% tariff on Chinese imports, and by April 16, this had soared to a staggering 245%.

Noteworthy, it wasn’t just the U.S. and crypto markets that were affected, the ripples traveled across continents. China’s yuan for example, hit a two-year low, while major Asian markets—like Singapore’s—suffered their worst crashes in over 16 years

And so, what began as a tariff maneuver had quickly spiraled into a full-blown global standoff—testing not just economies, but diplomatic resolve.

A 90-Day Pause: Relief or Reboot?

With all the damage done and continuing to spread like wildfire, on April 9, the White House announced a 90-day pause on most tariffs, signaling a temporary de-escalation and dialing down the market tension—but notably excluding China from the freeze. The impact was immediate. Markets erupted in one of the most euphoric trading sessions in recent memory: $5.5 trillion was added back into U.S. markets

Bitcoin, on the other hand, surged past $80,000, and at the time of writing, it is still holding well above $84,000. And, Wall Street marked its busiest trading day in 18 years, with over 30 billion shares changing hands.

However, while this pause provided breathing room, it remains a temporary relief—the fundamental tensions, especially with China, are still unresolved. And with both sides digging in, the next 90 days may determine whether this was a turning point… or just a calm before the next storm.

Conclusion: A Stress Test with a Clear Signal

There’s no question that President Trump’s aggressive tariff strategy has shaken the foundations of the global economy. Whether it ultimately delivers on promises of revitalized industry, stronger trade deals, and a more powerful U.S. dollar remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is how the financial world responded—and how Bitcoin quietly stood apart. While equity markets erased over $10 trillion and volatility soared, Bitcoin proved remarkably resilient, briefly dipping to $74,000 before recovering above $83,000. In doing so, it reinforced its narrative as a hedge against instability and arguably a tool for long-term monetary preservation.
